Keira Knightley Speaks Out On Whats So Challenging About Being A Mother

According to Keira Knightley, being a mother is definitely taxing. The star recently explained the way in which being a mom can be a “physical and emotional marathon.” As she awaits her new film, Collette, to hit the screens, the star sat down with a reporter to talk about the issues which women face today – as well as her movie.

The story on which the film is based on is the events around French author, Sidonie-Gabrielle Collette. Her experiences inspired Knightley to talk about what it’s like to be a woman. The star said to reporters from The Balance that she has a “responsibility” to make the world “more equal.”

Keira said the society in which we live is “male-dominated society,” so it’s helpful to think of the way women live outside of what men typically find interesting. Or, as she put it, it’s important to look at the “whole experience” of a woman, rather than just the thin part of feminity that’s expressed in the culture.

While the 33-year-old performer spoke on the challenges of motherhood, she admitted that she is in a privileged position, but it isn’t always a piece of cake; there are problems.

The star said that we don’t give women enough “credit” for the physical and emotional challenges they endure while raising a child and being a mother. The King Arthur alum said she still finds it “really f*cking difficult,” despite being so lucky in her career thus far.

Talking about the challenges doesn’t make her ungrateful for her successes, the star wanted to note, it’s just that it’s healthy to talk about the entire experience. We all can learn something from listening to others’ challenges in life.

Putting motherhood aside, Knightley also talked about the pressures of working in the movie industry, and how for many years, she struggled with mental health problems. The moments between ages 19 and 23 were “a big blur.”

Her world “crashed” when she was 22-years-old. She felt as though her entire world exploded when she was that age as if her brain had literally broken like glass. Therapy gave her the courage to return to the limelight as she has since done.
