Travis Shane Taylor was born on July 24, 1968, in Decatur, Alabama. He is the son of Charles Taylor, who worked as a machinist for Wyle Laboratories, a subcontractor for NASA during the 1960s. His fascination with science and engineering began at a young age, taking apart household electronics and reading science fiction. While still in high school, Taylor built a radio telescope with the assistance of his neighbor and won the state science fair. This achievement opened doors for him, with the Army offering him a job and scholarship.

Taylor’s academic pursuits began with a Bachelor of Science in Electrical Engineering from Auburn University in 1991.
